In heavy industrial manufacturing, port logistics, and steel production, travel gear mechanisms are exposed to relentless mechanical stress, heavy dynamic shock loads, and harsh operating environments. Under these demanding conditions, off-the-shelf or custom-welded wheel assemblies frequently suffer from flange wear, bearing premature failure, and high maintenance downtime.

The Demag DRS wheel block system provides a modular, heavy-duty solution designed to overcome these operational bottlenecks. Engineered for high load capacities ranging up to 40 metric tons (400 kN) per wheel, the DRS wheel range combines high-strength materials, precision bearing geometry, and flexible structural integration into a complete, ready-to-install travel package.

The Advantages of Demag DRS Wheel Block for Heavy-Duty Equipment

Heavy-duty material handling requires travel components that balance structural rigidity with track protection. The Demag DRS wheel block system achieves this through three core design principles:

1. Superior Material Engineering

Spheroidal Graphite Cast Iron (GGG70): As the primary tread option for rail-bound equipment, GGG70 nodular cast iron features a unique graphite matrix that offers high tensile strength and self-lubricating properties. This significantly reduces friction and wear on both the wheel flange and the crane rail (preventing rail gnawing).

Forged Steel Options (42CrMo): For extreme payload environments and high dynamic impact loads where nodular iron reaches its mechanical limits, forged steel wheels deliver maximum toughness and resistance to fatigue cracking.

2. High-Capacity Bearing Configuration

To handle the heavy radial deadweight of cranes and transfer machinery, alongside the intense axial lateral forces caused by crane skewing or track misalignment, DRS wheel blocks utilize double-row tapered roller bearings. This internal configuration distributes multi-directional loads evenly across raceways, providing superior rigidity, impact absorption, and long service life.

3. All-Weather Sealing Systems

Dust, moisture, scale, and abrasive particulate ingress are primary causes of bearing failure. The integrated multi-layer sealing system—comprising a non-contact outer labyrinth seal and a heavy-duty inner lip seal—firmly locks high-grade lithium lubricant inside the housing while blocking contaminants out.

DRS Wheel Range Overview & Load Specifications

The DRS product line spans eight standardized model sizes, designated by wheel diameter in millimeters. For heavy-duty industrial applications, the larger sizes in the range provide certified load-bearing performance:

Model Size

Wheel Diameter (mm)

Max. Wheel Load Capacity

Typical Heavy-Duty Applications

DRS 250

250 mm

Up to 16.0 Tons

Heavy gantry cranes, steel mill transfer cars, indexing tables

DRS 315

315 mm

Up to 22.0 Tons

High-capacity shipyard gantries, heavy machinery travel drives

DRS 400

400 mm

Up to 30.0 Tons

Port container cranes, ladle transfer cars, heavy transport platforms

DRS 500

500 mm

Up to 40.0 Tons

Heavy steelworks ladle cranes, shipbuilding gantry travel systems

(Note: Smaller sizes including DRS 112, 125, 160, and 200 are available for light-to-medium industrial loads.)

Key Heavy-Duty Industry Applications

Steel Mills & Foundries: Ladle cars, scrap charging cars, and heavy-duty coil transport systems operating under high temperatures and heavy dust.

Ports & Maritime Logistics: Container quay cranes, rubber-tired gantry (RTG) crane travel bogies, and shipyard transfer platforms.

Automotive & Manufacturing: Heavy mold transfer carts, automated guided vehicles (AGVs), and automated storage and retrieval systems (ASRS).

Mining & Bulk Material Handling: Reclaimers, stacker drive units, and heavy conveyor tripper cars.
